About

Hi, I'm Japheth.

Fifty. Gigantic. Gingerbeardy. Loves writing, jamming, gaming, and creating.

About

I was hatched to human parents in the pure waters of Genesee County, Michigan. I emerged from childhood an apex-introvert who clung to music, guitar, and Dungeons & Dragons. What wasn’t remedied by Dr. Dre, minor pentatonics, and slaying kobolds, I satisfied through an unwavering devotion to shenanigans.

I face-planted into adulthood and circled the drain at the base of Maslow's Pyramid, until discovering latent superpowers that ultimately — miraculously — led to a Ludicrous Speed career in IT.

When I crossed the threshold of 40, I experienced the world's okayest midlife crisis. There was no Porsche 911, no affair, no self-destruction, no youthful dumbassery. Much of my existential navel-gazing was rooted in the creative interests I'd neglected or deferred.

My writing, music, various technocreative projects, and this interwebs machinery are all part of a decision to prioritize my creative pursuits.

Narratively

I'm enamored with the art and practice of storytelling.

Fiction

I have several novella and novel manuscripts in draft. Thanks to my perfectionist tendencies, these projects are slow going. In the interest of experiencing the wondrous condition known as done, I committed to regularly publishing short fiction.

Janie and The Gray is a low-commitment entry point. It's a science fantasy serial in a dystopian future — each installment weighing in at exactly 200 words. Brown Sugar is also a favorite with readers.

You can get my short fiction delivered to your inbox by subscribing to my newsletter here or on Substack — as of now both newsletters are identical.

Tabletop

I love tabletop roleplaying games — particularly when I'm the GM. The challenge and chaos of spinning a story on the spot is strangely satisfying.

I may occasionally write about GM craft, TTRPG projects, and other tabletop-adjacent topics in The Margins.

Musically

At 13, I begged my parents for a white Pearl drum kit. They gave me a guitar instead — and I'm really glad they did. Some of my best memories have been with a Stratocaster slung around my neck.

Today, I play lead guitar in a 90s alt-rock cover band and have plans for a fun D&D-inspired side project.

Technically

I'm a pro nerd by trade. When it comes to my day job, I maintain Severance-like separation. This site reflects outtie-me — innie-me is siloed by design.

Beyond this site — which has been a big project all its own — I've got a few apps in the works. I recently launched my first iPhone app and I'm chipping away at a couple other concepts.

Personally

I live in Virginia, USA with my amazing wife, tiny humans, a ferocious Goldendoodle, an unexpected cat, and <adjective> fish. I mean, they're fish.
